An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming days…
- Summer air returns
- Higher dew points
- A few scattered thunderstorms
- Watching the tropics
Not a lot to cover in the weather department. Yes, temperatures and dew points are on the rise. It will feel like summer, again. We had a few nice days that attempted to spoil us. Nature doesn’t want us to get used to those temperatures. Thus, we are heading back into the upper 80’s to around 90 degrees. Dew points will rise into the 70’s over the coming days. That is air that you wear, as Jim Rasor says.
Here are the Wednesday afternoon dew point temperatures
A cold front will nudge into our northern counties on Thursday and Thursday night. This front will be the focus for showers and thunderstorms. Most of the area will remain dry from Tuesday night into Thursday morning. Outside of isolated thunderstorm chances. Thursday, however, might see at least some increase in the thunderstorm probabilities. This is especially true for the northern counties in southeast Missouri and southern Illinois (see the severe weather outlook further down in this blog update).
Here is the NAM model guidance for Thursday evening. Notice the band of showers and thunderstorms to our north. That may attempt to creep into our region, as well. Northern counties have the best shot at precipitation.
Any storms that form on Thursday could be on the strong side. Gusty winds and lightning will be the main concern. Widespread severe weather is not anticipated. A couple of storms could approach severe levels on Thursday and Thursday evening. Let’s keep an eye on it.
Friday into Sunday will deliver warm temperatures. Guidance is still mixed as to rain and storm coverage Friday and Saturday. I have included 40%-50% chances through Saturday. LEt’s keep an eye on it. Confidence is lower Friday and Saturday.
Check out the 24 hour temperature change map. This is from 7 am on Monday to 7 am on Tuesday. Red equals warmer air. We are definitely warming up.
This is broad-brushed. Totals will vary based on thunderstorm placement. Stronger storms can produce a quick one inch of rain.
There could be some scattered showers and thunderstorms into the weekend.
This chart is through Saturday morning at 7 am
I will keep the Beau Dodson Weather Facebook page updated, Beau Dodson on Twitter, and the texts. Don’t forget if you want to receive links to the daily blog and Facebook updates to check box number four on the texting site. That is the one used for non-severe days.
Storm Tracking Radar
We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not seem to be updating then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.
If you have any problems then please send me an email beaudodson@usawx.com

We also have a new national interactive radar – you can view that radar by clicking here.
Local interactive city radars include St Louis, Mt Vernon, Evansville, Poplar Bluff, Cape Girardeau, Marion, Paducah, Hopkinsville, Memphis, Nashville, Dyersburg, and all of eastern Kentucky – these are interactive radars. Local city radars – click here

Can we expect severe thunderstorms over the next 24 to 48 hours? Remember that a severe thunderstorm is defined as a thunderstorm that produces 58 mph winds or higher, quarter size hail or larger, and/or a tornado.
.
Tuesday night into Wednesday: No severe weather anticipated. Wednesday afternoon storms could be intense over southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, and northwest Kentucky.
Wednesday night: Evening storms could produce strong winds and lightning.
Thursday and Thursday night: A cold front approaches from the north. A few strong storms can’t be ruled out over our northern counties. That would include northern parts of southeast Missouri and northern parts of southern Illinois.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed some of our region in a marginal risk for severe storms. That would include the olive/dark green area. Here is the current outlook for Thursday. Light green represents a few storms, but below severe levels. Dark green is a marginal risk for a few stronger storms.
Friday and Saturday: Some thunderstorms are possible. Monitor updates.

Who do you trust for your weather information and who holds them accountable?
I have studied weather in our region since the late 1970’s. I have 37 years of experience in observing our regions weather patterns. My degree is in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University and an Associate of Science (AS). I am currently working on my Bachelor’s Degree in Geoscience.
My resume includes:
Member of the American Meteorological Society.
NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador.
Meteorologist for McCracken County Emergency Management. I served from 2005 through 2015.
I own and operate the Southern Illinois Weather Observatory.
Recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross.
In 2009 I was presented with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Award.
Recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives for my service to the State of Kentucky leading up to several winter storms and severe weather outbreaks.
I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.
There is a lot of noise on the internet. A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation. Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.
My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.
- Communicate in simple terms
- To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
- Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, and the blog
- Minimize the “hype” that you might see on television or through other weather sources
- Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
