A slow moving front will bring multiple shower and storm chances through the end of the week. The greatest risk arrives tonight when the chance of a wetting rain peaks across most of the region. More humid conditions can also be expected with minRH values remaining above 50%. Dispersion will be fair to good today and Friday.

A Haines Index of 6 means a high potential for an existing fire to become large or exhibit erratic fire behavior, 5 means medium potential, 4 means low potential, and anything less than 4 means very low potential.

Beau’s Forecast Discussion

We are waking up to warm and muggy conditions. Patchy fog in the region, as well. The fog will quickly mix out over the next couple of hours.

It will be hot and muggy today. Highs will be in the 90s. Heat index values will be 98 to 104 degrees. Air you wear.

A few storms are possible this morning over mainly southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. Perhaps into northwest Kentucky. Storms this morning could produce brief downpours and lightning. The risk of severe weather this morning is low.

As of 6 am, you can see scattered showers and storms over Missouri and Illinois. This is moving east southeast, but weakening.

The atmosphere will become increasingly unstable this afternoon and evening. CAPE values will pop above 2000 joules. CAPE is energy that storms tap into. Higher CAPE values can mean severe weather.

You can see the CAPE on this graphic. This is the Hrrr model. CAPE values of 1000 to 3000 will be possible late this afternoon into the evening hours.

As mentioned above, there are some storms in the region this morning. Those storms will eventually weaken and leave boundaries draped across the region.

There is not a lot of forcing this afternoon. What does that mean? For storms to develop you need lift. Forcing. Without forcing you won’t have storms or you won’t have many storms.

The boundaries could help lead to redevelopment and lift. I will be monitoring that as we move through the day.

Stronger forcing arrives tonight along a cold front. Thunderstorms will develop as the front moves into the warm/hot muggy air.

Some of those thunderstorms could produce torrential downpours, frequent lightning, and damaging wind. Perhaps a few reports of hail if the storms remain discreet (early on). The tornado risk is low, but not zero. Any tornado threat would be short-lived.

Damaging wind is the primary concern this afternoon and tonight. A few watches and warnings will be possible.

We will need to monitor storm clusters as they eventually become more organized and perhaps line out. In other words, become a line of storms. Any bowing segments could produce damaging wind.

Tomorrow will be warm and humid. A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible. I am watching tomorrow afternoon and night for some intense thunderstorms. I can’t rule out a few storms producing damaging wind Friday afternoon and night.

The cold front will sink southward Friday night and Saturday. A few storms may remain in the region Saturday, but with time the coverage and intensity will wane.

Sunday is expected to be dry. It will be warm Sunday. Perhaps a bit less humid.

Lower temperatures and lower humidity levels are anticipated next week.

Today’s Storm Prediction Center’s (SPC) Severe Weather Outlook

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter or larger size hail, and/or a tornado.
