Today through August 15th:  A few storms could produce strong and gusty wind over the coming days.  Organized severe weather appears unlikely.  Monitor updates.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map.  Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather advice:

Updated August 11, 2020

The heat has returned.  Use care, as always.  A few thunderstorms will be possible this week.  Lightning will be the primary concern.  Locally heavy rain.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Warm and humid.
    2.   Unsettled weather with several chances of showers and thunderstorms.
    3.   Locally heavy rain where storms occur.

The main weather story over the coming days will be periodic thunderstorm chances.

We had an organized MCS move across the region last night with gusty wind and heavy rain.  A few reports of wind damage were received, as well.

That organized MCS was part of a larger system that produces hundreds of millions of dollars in damage from Iowa into northern Illinois and Indiana.  Winds of 80 to 115 mph were reported in the above mentioned areas.

There were numerous farms that lost their entire corn crop because of the high winds.

Thankfully, we did not have to deal with those type of winds.

Over the coming days we will have several fairly weak disturbances move across our area.

These disturbances will mix with the warm and humid air.  That means showers and thunderstorms.

The tricky part of the forecast, as always, will be how much coverage will there be.

For now, I have scattered showers and thunderstorms in the forecast.

There could be one or more organized periods of thunderstorms, as well.  If an MCS develops then we will have to deal with something like we had last night.  Widespread showers and thunderstorms.  Some with high wind and torrential rain.

Forecasting MCS’s usually come down to the last 12 to 24 hours.  In other words, they aren’t typically forecast more than a day in advance.

If you have outdoor activities into the weekend and early next week then you will want to monitor the latest updates.

Highs will be partially depedent on cloud cover and precipitation.  Highs in the middle 80s to around 90 degrees will be the general rule.  Overnight lows around 70 degrees.

Fairly typical temperatures for the month of August.

A cold front will push into the region Saturday night and Sunday.  This is not a strong front, but may help lower dew points and humidity levels.  We will have to see just how far south it pushes.

It appears that we will dip below normal in the temperature department next week.  Fingers crossed.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models.  Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather.  All models are wrong.  Some are more wrong than others.  Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation.  If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
