Today through May 3rd:  I am monitoring Friday and Saturday.  For now, confidence in severe weather developing is low.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Shower and thunderstorm chances Monday.
    2.   Cooler temperatures.
    3.   Monitoring rain chances this coming weekend.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

Forecast Discussion

Widespread showers and thunderstorms impacted the region over the past 24 hours.

There were a few severe thunderstorm warnings in southeast Missouri (mainly for hail).

Some locations have received more than an inch of rain, thus far.

As of 7 AM, radar showed widespread showers and thunderstorms across the region.  The heaviest rain was across southeast Illinois, western Kentucky, and northwes Tennessee.  Pushing eastward.

Lighter precipitation to the west.

Here was a screen shot of what radar looked like at 7 AM.  See the live radars at the bottom of the page.

Satellite shows widespread clouds.  Some clearing well back in Missouri.  That will move east, with time.

All of this rain will exit as we move through the afternoon hours.  By evening, there may still be a couple of showers left over primarily southeast Illinois, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee.  Nothing of significance.

The sky will clear out tonight.  It will be chilly.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be nice. Pleasant.  It will be cool at night and mild during the day.

There may be some scattered frost Tuesday night in cold favored areas.  That would mainly be over northern portions of southeast Missouri, northern portions of southern Illinois, and along the Kentucky/Indiana state line.  Areas to the south should monitor updates.

Either way, it does not appear to be a heavy frost threat.   Perhaps our last frost threat?  Let’s hope.  I think that we are all ready for warm temperatures to stick around longer than a couple of days.

There is lower than average confidence in the Thursday through Sunday time-frame.  I am hoping confidence will increase over the next day or two.

For now, this is the forecast.

What could change?  The timing of the highest rain chances.

It is possible That much of Thursday remains dry across a decent chunk of the region.  With increasing rain chances Friday and especially Saturday.

Thursday should start out mostly sunny.  Increasing clouds as the day wears on.  Perhaps a shower or thunderstorm entering southeast Missouri late in the day.

Widely scattered to scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible Thursday night into Friday night area-wide.

A cold front will approach the region Saturday and Saturday night.  This front will have showers and thunderstorms associated with it.  Perhaps some locally heavy downpours.

I am monitoring the threat of severe weather.  The Storm Prediction Center has said we should monitor updates concerning Saturday’s severe threat.  I agree.

It is too early to determine if severe weather will be a threat.  There appears to be questions on the intensity and placement of all the features Saturday into Saturday night.  The strength of the low, the strength of the trough and front, and so on.

I will keep an eye on it, as always.

Guidance is not in agreement about next Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.  There is the potential of additional showers and thunderstorms.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
