Weather Highlights

1. Isolated showers and thunderstorms today.
2. Warm and mild. Becoming windy today into Sunday.
3. Thunderstorm chances ramp up late Saturday into Saturday night/Sunday morning.
4. A few of the thunderstorms could become severe with damaging wind and hail.
5. Cooler behind the cold front Sunday into Monday.

As we prepare for spring, let’s make sure you have three to five ways of receiving your severe weather information.

Forecast Discussion

No significant weather concerns as we wake up this morning.

Our southern closed low pressure center continues to swirl across the Gulf of Mexico states. It is slowing moving into the Tennessee Valley.

This system brought severe flooding to Florida. You likely saw it on the news. Some locations received more than 25 inches of rain!

Thankfully, we won’t be dealing with anything like that.

The system will bring some clouds into our area. It will also bring a few showers and thunderstorms into Tennessee and Kentucky. Lower chances over Illinois.

The farther south and east you travel, the higher the chances of running into some showers and perhaps even a non-severe thunderstorm.

That system will pull away form our region Friday night. It won’t be lingering. Any showers will exit with it.

A new system will develop over Iowa Friday night into Saturday. This area of low pressure will then push into the Great Lakes. A trailing cold front will sweep across our region Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning.

This front will be accompanied by showers and thunderstorms. Peak chances will arrive Saturday night. As a matter of fact, much of Saturday may end up dry. We may have to wait until the front arrives for widespread showers and thunderstorms. That won’t occur until the overnight hours.

There should be just enough instability for a few of the thunderstorms to become severe with damaging wind and large hail. Some of the hail could be larger than quarters, especially over Missouri.

The tornado risk appears low, but one can’t ever rule out a brief tornado when we have severe thunderstorms in the region.

We are not looking at a tornado outbreak or long-tracked supercell tornadoes.

The primary concern will be late Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. This is when the ingredients come together for a few of the thunderstorms to become severe.

The risk will be higher over Missouri and Illinois. That would be late Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. The line will form and then march eastward. With time, the line will lose strength as instability wanes Saturday night. That means the severe weather risk is lower over Kentucky and Tennessee vs Missouri and Illinois.

Rainfall totals of 0.30″ to 0.60″ are anticipated from this event. Locally higher in severe thunderstorms.

Here is the WPC NOAA rainfall forecast

I would not be surprised if some locations received very little in the way of rainfall.

That system will pull away from the region Sunday morning. Perhaps a few lingering showers and thunderstorms the first half of the day. The bulk of the rain should be on its way out.

That will leave Sunday with some clouds and somewhat cooler temperatures behind the cold front.

Dry conditions are anticipated Monday and Tuesday. Perhaps Wednesday. I am watching another chance of showers and thunderstorms late next week.

The Storm Prediction Center has outlined us in a low end risk of severe weather Saturday.

Today through April 18th: A couple of the Saturday afternoon and night thunderstorms could produce damaging wind and hail. The tornado risk is low, but not zero. Mainly over Missouri for the tornado risk. The line will weaken with time as it moves farther east.

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
