Monday to Monday
1. Is lightning in the forecast? Possible. A slight chance of lightning this morning over southern IL and western KY. A chance of lightning area-wide Friday night into Sunday.
2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast? Monitor. I am closely monitoring a storm system set to arrive Friday night into Sunday. I can’t rule out thunderstorms. It is too early to know if severe weather will be a concern.
3. Is flash flooding in the forecast? No.
4. Will the heat index exceed 100 degrees? No.
5. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees? No.
6. Is measurable snow and/or sleet in the forecast? Not at this time. Monitor updates concerning a weekend storm system. A few models show snow and ice. Chances appear limited, for now. I am watching it, as well.
7. Is freezing rain/ice in the forecast? Not at this time. Monitor updates concerning a weekend storm system. A few models show snow and ice. Chances appear limited, for now. I am watching it, as well.
Freezing rain is rain that falls and instantly freezes on objects such as trees and power lines

Tuesday night: 4. Low risk.
Fire Weather Discussion
A decent chance for a wetting rain exists this morning for areas mainly along and north of the Interstate 64 corridor. Mainly dry conditions expected the rest of the work week, except a light shower is possible across parts of the area Tuesday afternoon and again on Friday. A very good chance for a soaking rain is forecast this coming weekend. High pressure builds across the region on Wednesday, which will lead to the lightest transport winds of the week.
A Haines Index of 6 means a high potential for an existing fire to become large or exhibit erratic fire behavior, 5 means medium potential, 4 means low potential, and anything less than 4 means very low potential.

- Some clouds today with patchy light showers this morning. A small chance of thunder this morning, as well.
- Mostly dry forecast tonight into Friday morning. Low chances for isolated light rain tonight and tomorrow/tomorrow night over south Illinois and western Kentucky. A kept chances low.
- Seasonal temperatures most of this week. Slow warming trend Thursday into Saturday ahead of our next system. Cooler behind it.
- Higher rain chances Friday night into the weekend. Perhaps some thunderstorms.
Weather advice:
Make sure you have three to five ways of receiving your severe weather information.
.Forecast Discussion
A fast moving clipper like system is pushing across the region this morning. It has brought a band of mainly light showers to the region. See the radars.
The rain is moving east southeast and will pivot out of the region as we move through the morning hours.
I did a radar snapshot at 7 am. This is what it showed.
Some additional showers are possible, until then. There is a small chance of lightning over southern Illinois and western Kentucky, as well. No severe concerns.
This system will push off to our east this afternoon.
Another weak system approaches tonight into tomorrow night. It will bring some clouds and a low end 10%-20% chance of light showers to mainly Illinois and northwest Kentucky. Many will simply remain dry. No concerns for snow or ice.
Wednesday into Friday afternoon will be dry. I don’t expect any issues.
Coolish temperatures Wednesday and then a bit milder Thursday and Friday. That will be ahead of our next system that arrives this weekend.
A stronger cold front pushes into the region Friday night into Saturday night/Sunday. There are still some differences in the model guidance as to when this system arrives and when it departs.
GFS model for Friday night/Saturday morning. You can see green in our region. Rain. Blue is snow (well to our north).
The Canadian model shows something similar.
For now, I have showers and thunderstorms back in the forecast Friday night into the weekend.
A few thunderstorms will be possible along this front, but it is still too early to know if severe thunderstorms or tornadoes will be a concern. I am closely monitoring all of the model data. I will update the forecast as forecast confidence in the final outcome increases.
The Storm Prediction Center has outlined an area to our south for severe thunderstorms this weekend.
I will be closely monitoring trends.
Rain totals will likely top 0.50″ in some locations.
Occasionally, the EC models shows snow and ice near our region Saturday into Sunday. For now, it is sort of an outlier. It is showing colder air than other data.
As always, I am watching it.
EC snowfall map for this weekend.
I continue to watch a cold shot the 3rd and 4th week of December. Whether mid to late month can produce any snow or ice will need to be monitored. Just too early to make a forecast call.
I am watching.

What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
