Weather Highlights

    1.   Warm this week.
    2.   Unsettled weather with some rain chances.
    3.   Colder by Halloween.  Frost and freeze chances.

Weather advice:

Make sure you have three to five ways of receiving your severe weather information.

.Forecast Discussion

A complicated weather forecast continues to unfold through Halloween.

The main question is centered around the timing of a strong cold front.

We do not have any weather concerns today or tonight.  Some clouds.  We will see clearing as the day wears on.  It will be very warm today with well above average temperatures.

Here is the temperature anomaly map for today.  This shows you how many degrees above average temperatures will be.

Tomorrow’s anomalies

Thursday’s anomalies

All of that equals highs well into the 70s and 80s across our region through Friday.

A few showers will be possible over mainly southeast Missouri tonight into Wednesday night.  Most of the area will remain dry through at least Thursday mnrning.

Rain chances being to ramp up Thursday night and increase Friday through Sunday night.

Confidence is slowly increasing that the front will pass through the region Sunday afternoon and night.  That will lead to colder weather by Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week.

A chilly Halloween is increasingly likely.

The early frontal passage would mean a dry and chilly Halloween.

Over the last few days, guidance has ranged from a Sunday frontal passage to a Halloween frontal passage.

Let me show you a few graphics.

This is the EC model guidance for Sunday.  You can see the rain along the frontal boundary.

Temperatures on the EC.  Much colder air behind the front.

This is the GFS model guidance for Sunday.

The GFS temperatures.  Sunday afternoon.  Colder air moving south and southeast.

Here is a computer animation showing the colder air arriving Sunday and Monday.

Gusty winds will be with us over the coming days.  Through Sunday, actually.  You can expect wind gusts of 15 to 30 mph Wednesday into Friday and then again Saturday night into Monday.

Temperatures will fall to below average anomalies Sunday night into the middle of next week.

Monday’s temperature anomalies.

Tuesday’s temperature anomalies

Wednesday’s temperature anomalies.

Let’s look at rainfall totals.

There is a wide range of possibilities when it comes to each location.

I am forecasting the highest totals to be across southeast Missouri and southern Illinois.  Tapering lower totals as you travel south and east in the region.

Here is the official WPC/NOAA rainfall forecast.

This is through Friday morning

This is through Monday morning

The WPC/NOAA has high totals across portions of the region.

There is some question about these numbers.  With that said, several periods of rain will develop later this week into Sunday night.  Some training of showers and thunderstorms will enhance rain totals.

We do need rain.  Many areas are abnormally dry or in drought conditions.

I am monitoring the chance of frost and/or freeze conditions next Monday night through Wednesday night.  At one point, it appeared the coldest air would arrive Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night.

Latest trends are to bring it in about 24 hours earlier.  I will continue to monitor trends.
