1. Is lightning in the forecast? Possible. Isolated lightning is possible, but the bulk of the region should remain dry over the coming days. Any storms would be isolated to widely scattered through Sunday. Keep in mind, during the summer months, we can occasionally have MCS’s form. Larger thunderstorm complexes. These can make a scattered storm forecast become numerous storms. They are extremely difficult to predict. I will be monitoring for that.

2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast? Low risk. Any storms that form in the heat of the day could be intense.

3. Is flash flooding in the forecast? Monitor. Slow moving storms can cause brief water issues. Models have been trending drier and warmer. Any storms would be isolated or widely scattered through Sunday.

4. Will the heat index exceed 100 degrees? Yes. Daily through at least Sunday.

5. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees? No.

6. Is measurable snow and/or sleet in the forecast? No.

7. Is freezing rain/ice in the forecast? No.

Today’s Average Regional Forecast Numbers

Temperatures will vary based on cloud cover and precipitation. Keep that in mind.

Hot Weather!

There is only one real weather story over the coming days. The heat.

Expect widespread mid to upper 90s today and tomorrow. Heat index values of 105 to 115 with locally 120 degrees possible.

This is dangerous heat. Use care and take breaks. Hydrate. Common sense safety.

Otherwise, any thunderstorm chances will be capped at 0% to 10% for most of the region. I do have 30% numbers for portions of the region Saturday and Saturday night.

I disturbance will pass through the region. This could spark some storms. Whether it becomes more than that, I will need to monitor.

Some storms could be intense. Plenty of energy to tap into. Wind shear will be weak.

I will monitor the mid and end of next week for additional thunderstorm chances.

This outlook covers southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and far northwest Tennessee.

Today through April 18th: A couple of the Saturday afternoon and night thunderstorms could produce damaging wind and hail. The tornado risk is low, but not zero. Mainly over Missouri for the tornado risk. The line will weaken with time as it moves farther east.

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
