Forecast Discussion
Widespread showers and thunderstorms will be the general rule today into tonight.
Peak rain chances will be this afternoon into tonight.
A frontal boundary is moving north through the region this morning. Radar already shows scattered showers across southeast Missouri.
Rain coverage will rapidly increase this afternoon into tonight as a cold front approaches the region.
Our peak rain chances will be Thursday afternoon into Thursday night. See the future-cast radars below.
The area of low pressure will push across our region Thursday night into Friday morning. The good news is that we are not anticipating widespread severe thunderstorms. A few of the storms could be strong over the Missouri Bootheel and then along and south of the KY/TN line.
The SPC does have a level 1 risk of severe weather in those areas. Overall, the risk of severe weather is low.
Portions of western Kentucky and northwest Tennessee may experience training showers and thunderstorms. Moderate precipitation repeatedly moving over the same area. The atmosphere will be quite moist with Gulf of Mexico air. This is where the heaviest rain totals will likely occur. Some counties may experience rain totals in excess of 1.0″.
Overall, rain totals were lowered some. That is partly because of lower rain chances Friday night into Saturday. That system is going to split and mostly go north and south of our local area.
Here is the rainfall outlook from today through Saturday night/Sunday morning.
The vast majority of this will fall today and tonight.
Heavier south vs north.
The system will be pulling away from the region late tonight and Friday morning. That will mean decreasing shower chances.
Some clouds will linger into Friday. A few showers (low end chances) will be possible during the day Friday, but nothing significant. Rain totals during the day Friday would be less than 0.10″.
Yet another cold front will move into the region Saturday. As mentioned above, this system is trending farther south and north. It will basically split as it approaches our region.
That means higher rain chances north and south of our local area. That leaves us in the middle with just low-end rain chances.
If you have outdoor plans, then have a plan B in case of rain. Then, monitor updates and radars.
Rain totals will be less than 0.25″ Saturday. Some areas will receive little or no rainfall.
Sunday through Tuesday will be dry. Cooler than average temperatures, as well. That seems to be the current pattern theme that we find ourselves in.

Today through April 18th: A couple of the Saturday afternoon and night thunderstorms could produce damaging wind and hail. The tornado risk is low, but not zero. Mainly over Missouri for the tornado risk. The line will weaken with time as it moves farther east.
