This outlook covers southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and far northwest Tennessee.

Today through January 22nd:  I will keep an eye on Monday.  For now, this appears to be a day with lightning possible, but sub-severe storms.  Monitor updates.

I am watching Wednesday.  For now, the risk of severe weather appears minimal.  Perhaps a greater risk to our south.  Monitor updates in case the low tracks farther to the north northwest.  If that were to happen, then severe weather chances would ramp up.

Current Weather Discussion

Good day, everyone.

Portions of the region continue to remain shrouded in cloud cover.  The eastern half of the region.

The western half of the region is basking in full sunshine!

You can see that on this 10:30 AM satellite view.  Clouds east.  Sun west.

Slowly, the sunshine will spread eastward.

There will be a temperature gradient because of the clouds.  Cooler east and warmer west.   I say, warmer.  It isn’t going to be all that warm today.  A typical January day for our region.  Chilly.

Our short-lived cold snap will already be on the way out by tomorrow.

Milder air will stream into the region from the west southwest.

That milder air will set the stage for additional shower chances late Sunday night and especially Monday into Monday night.  A few rumbles of thunder will be possible, as well.

For now, it appears the severe weather threat Monday will be minimal.  I will keep an eye on it.  A few of the guidance packages do show a couple of stronger thunderstorms.

That rain will exit Monday night.

Tuesday will deliver a mix of sun and clouds.  Perhaps a lingering shower or two.  Mainly over our eastern counties.

Above average temperatures both Monday and Tuesday.

Our next storm system will arrive late Tuesday night into Wednesday.  Not much down time in-between the two events.

We have been going back and forth on the risk of severe weather Wednesday.  At times, the models have shown an outbreak of severe thunderstorms.

The trends over the past 48 hours have been for the severe weather to be shunted to our south.  Keeping us in the showery section of the system.  Perhaps a few embedded rumbles of thunder, as well.

The track of the low is important when forecasting severe weather.  Typically, severe weather occurs to the south and east of the low.

The GFS ensembles are mixed on where the low tracks.

Remember, ensembles are the same model ran over and over again with slightly different beginning variables.

The general idea, is that the more of the ensembles that agree the higher the confidence in the forecast.

For now, the GEFS is all over the place with where the L (low) tracks.

We will need to closely monitor the Wednesday system.  Confidence in the severe weather portion of the forecast is low.

Confidence in rain chances is high.

Rain totals between Monday and Thursday will likely range from 0.6″ to 1.20″ with pockets of greater than 1.20″.  Locally heavy downpours will be possible with both systems.

I would not be surprised if a few spots top two inches of rain.

Our active pattern continues in the long-range data with another chance of precipitation next Saturday night and Sunday.  We have plenty of time to monitor that event.

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

The Winter Outlook has been posted.  Another La Nina winter.  As always, there will be wild cards in the forecast.

La Nina means that portions of the Pacific Ocean are cooler than normal.  El Nino means that the Pacific waters are warmer than normal.

La Niña means Little Girl in Spanish. La Niña is also sometimes called El Viejo, anti-El Niño, or simply “a cold event.” La Niña has the opposite effect of El Niño. During La Niña events, trade winds are even stronger than usual, pushing more warm water toward Asia. Off the west coast of the Americas, upwelling increases, bringing cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface.

These cold waters in the Pacific push the jet stream northward. This tends to lead to drought in the southern U.S. and heavy rains and flooding in the Pacific Northwest and Canada. During a La Niña year, winter temperatures are warmer than normal in the South and cooler than normal in the North

No two winters are alike.  No two La Nina’s are alike.

The last two winters have been La Nina winters.  Both winters delivered a variety of weather conditions.

As you know, during the past two winters we did experience severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.  That is not unusual for La Nina conditions.

I do expect an increased risk of severe thunderstorms and ice.  Those are common during the La Nina winter years.

We will have to monitor the NAO.  If it does go negative then we have increased probabilities of cold air intrusions.

Let’s keep in mind, that long range forecasts are less accurate than short-range forecasts.

What we can’t tell you are the possible extreme events.  You could have a mild December and January and the winter be backloaded with cold and snow during the Month of February.  Or, the other way around.

We can’t tell you if there will be one large ice-storm or one large tornado outbreak.  Long-range outlooks don’t work that way.

People tend to remember winters as severe if there is a mega-event.  Like the big ice storm in 2009.  Everyone will remember that winter.  Like the December tornado last year.  Everyone will remember that winter.

We are able to tell you, with some degree of certainty, the overall generalities of the winter.

Of course, I understand that everyone wants to know if there will be a big snowstorm or a big event.  We aren’t that accurate, yet.  Those type of forecasts are left for short-range weather outlooks.  Not long range ones.

Here is what will influence the winter.

ENSO.  La Nina.  The third year in a row.  Rare to have three La Nina’s in a row.  This has only happened three times in recorded history.

Outlook thoughts.

Odds favor December through February, when all is said and done, averaging above normal in the temperature department.  Above average in the precipitation department.

That certainly does not mean there won’t be cold spells.

Our region typically experiences a wide variety of weather during the winter months.  That includes snow, ice, and severe thunderstorms.  I would be surprised if this winter doesn’t deliver those conditions.
