Today through September 5th: Organized severe weather is unlikely.
.
.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion
Well, it finally rained across much of the region. Some areas still remained dry. That seems to be the normal pattern during the summer months. Feast or famine.
The Weather Observatory FINALLY picked up 1.02″ of rain. We needed it. Most of August had been dry. The bulk of the rain at my location (in Massac County) had fallen the first few days of the month.
I am thankful the rain. It came down hard. Most of that fell in less than thirty minutes. That has also been the theme of this summer. When it did rain, it poured.
There were a couple of reports of wind damage in the quad-state area. A few flash flooding reports, as well. Lightning was prolific.
Here are the radar estimated rain totals.
Double click the image to enlarge it. There were some locations that received more than FOUR inches of rain!
24-hour rainfall totals (what has fallen)
Here is the last 72 hours.
We still have quite a few clouds in the region (as of this early AM typing).
Clouds should clear as we move through the day. A cold front is pushing across the region.
Some patchy morning light rain and drizzle is still being reported in some counties. I can’t rule out some additional showers and thunderstorms forming as the front advances east/southeast.
For the most part, today will be dry across the north northwest two-thirds of the region. The best chance of a few showers and thunderstorms will be across western Kentucky, the Missouri Bootheel, and northwest Tennessee.
Even there, the bulk of the rain is over.
Drier and cooler air will filter into the region today and tonight. It won’t feel as oppressive once this air arrives.
Dew points will be lower.
Dew point controls how muggy it feels outside.
For example, here are this morning’s dew points. Air you wear.
Now, look at Wednesday’s dew points. Much lower. Nicer. Less humid.
That air will linger into Friday and somewhat into Saturday.
By Saturday and Sunday, however, dew points will begin to creep back up. That means it will begin to feel a bit more humid.
I have low-end shower and thunderstorm chances in the forecast Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Probably Tuesday, as well.
For now, I have capped them at 20%.
Remember, a 20% chance of thunderstorms does not mean dry weather. It means that radar will usually have at least a few showers and thunderstorms dotting it. Most areas will remain dry. A few spots will receive rain.
I am watching the tropical Atlantic. The National Hurricane Center is watching these two disturbances. For now, they have not developed.
The tropics have been quite for a while now. Thankfully. Let’s hope September, October, and November don’t bring it to an end with a bang. That does happen some years. Quite. Quite. Bang.
As a reminder, we typically see an uptick in tornado activity from mid-October through the end of November. Some of our deadlier outbreaks have occurred during the autumn and winter months.
Make sure you have the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app downloaded on your phone. Make sure your subscription is up to date.
You can check your subscription by going to www.weathertalk.com
These are the different product screens in the app.
Here is an example of the rapid-fire tornado messages that I send out.
Let’s keep that in the back of our mind. The weather will become increasingly active as we push deeper into the autumn months.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
