Today through August 10th:  I will be monitoring a line of thunderstorms this evening and tonight.  Wind damage will be possible with the line.  There remain questions on how far south this will hold together.  Monitor.

Otherwise, summer thunderstorms can produce isolated wind damage and hail.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Thunderstorm chances.
    2.   Hot today.  Not quite as hot Thursday and Friday.
    3.   Weekend forecast.

.

Weather advice:

Monitor your Beau Dodson Weather app.   Thunderstorms are likely over the next several days.  A few could become severe with high wind gusts.

.

Weather Discussion

A hot day ahead of us.   Expect highs in the upper 80s to middle 90s.  Heat index values of 100 to 110 degrees.

Other than hot conditions, the primary weather story will be a cold front that will nudge its way southward this afternoon into tonight.

You can see the front on this morning satellite and radar data.  See it to our northwest?

This front will have plenty of unstable air to work with.  CAPE values (a measure of energy that thunderstorms tap into) will be high over portions of the region.  High enough to warrant our attention if thunderstorms do develop.

Currently, the main question is the extent of the thunderstorm coverage.  Numerous models (see the future-cast radars below) show a line of storms forming in Missouri and Illinois.  That line then sweeps southward.

This could be an MCS situation.  A thunderstorm complex.  Typically, these thunderstorm complexes cover quite a large area.  They can produce torrential rain, damaging wind gusts, hail, and frequent lightning.

There remain questions about the severe weather threat.  The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a large portion of the region in a level one and two risk.  Those are the two lowest risk levels.

With that said, if a line of thunderstorms forms then it could produce some pockets of wind damage.  Locally heavy rain is always a concern this time of the year.

Over recent weeks, we have experienced a WIDE range of rain totals.

Let’s take a look at some of those rain totals.  Portions of the region are soaked.  Others are still in drought conditions.  Feast or famine.

Rain totals from the last two days.

Double click the image to enlarge it.  Portions of southeast Illinois received more than ten inches of rain.  Some of that is showing up on this graphic, but it didn’t capture all of it.

The last seven days

The last fourteen days

The last thirty days

Notice that streak through the St Louis area.  Some locations received more than a foot of rain during that event (most of that fell in less than twelve hours).

You can also see the eastern Kentucky flooding.

Rain totals today into next week will once again vary greatly.  Some locations may receive no measurable rainfall.  Other locations could easily pick up an inch or two of rain.

Peak rain chances will be tonight into Friday.  Then, chances will be lower over the weekend into early next week.

We may have another frontal boundary in the region Monday or Tuesday.  I am watching that.  For now, I have low-end precipitation chances.  That may need updating if a front swings our way.

Temperatures won’t be extreme, but they will be warm.   Muggy conditions, at times.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
