7-day forecast for southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee.
This is a BLEND for the region. See the detailed region by region forecast further down in this post.
THE FORECAST IS GOING TO VARY FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION.
SEE THE DAILY DETAILS (REGION BY REGION) FURTHER DOWN IN THIS BLOG UPDATE.
Confidence in the daily chances of precipitation is currently MEDIUM. There may be adjustments to the probability number.
I am struggling with Saturday’s numbers. The bulk of Saturday’s rain may end up being late afternoon into the overnight hours. If you have outdoor plans, then monitor updates.
48-hour forecast
.
.
Wednesday to Wednesday
1. Is lightning in the forecast? Yes. Lightning is possible Thursday into Tuesday.
2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast? Monitor. Severe thunderstorms are possible Saturday afternoon and night. Damaging wind and hail will be the primary concern. I am monitoring next week. We may have a couple of chances of severe thunderstorms. Monitor updates moving forward.
The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes
3. Is flash flooding in the forecast? Monitor. Locally heavy rain will be possible over the coming ten days. Right now, I am monitoring Friday into Saturday night. Then, I am monitoring Monday and Tuesday. It does appear we are entering a more active pattern.
4. Will the heat index top 100 degrees? No.
5. Is measurable snow or ice in the forecast? No.
6. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees? No.

Today through May 3rd: I am monitoring Saturday for the risk of a few severe thunderstorms. The primary concern will be during the afternoon into the overnight hours. A few storms could produce damaging wind and hail.
I am monitoring next week for several chances of showers and thunderstorms. I can’t rule out severe weather. Monitor updates.
.
.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion
-
- Nice day after a chilly start.
- Unsettled weather over the coming one to two weeks.
Weather advice:
Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages. We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner. Thus, we made the app. See links at the bottom of the page.
.
Forecast Discussion
Well, we are once again waking up to widespread 30s across the region. Brrr. There have been several reports of frost.
The bulk of the region dipped down into the 36 to 40 degree range. A few cold favored locations were slightly cooler. Hopefully, the frost was not enough to cause any issues.
I recorded a low of 36 at the Weather Observatory in Massac County.
It will be a nice day across the region. Quite a bit of sunshine. Highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s. No complaints.
Our weather is going to become unsettled as we move through the coming days.
Several upper level disturbances, cold fronts, warm fronts, and dry lines to monitor. This will make for a complicated daily forecast.
The primary difficulty will be placement of the higher rain chances and the exact probability numbers to put on any given 12-hour period.
I will give it my best!
Let me show you the official rainfall outlook. I will break this down into shorter time-frames.
Notice how Missouri and Illinois have higher rain totals through Saturday morning vs Kentucky and Tennessee. That is because the precipitation coverage will be higher in those area through Friday night.
These are rain totals through 7 AM Friday
These are rain totals through 7 AM Saturday
These are rain totals through 7 AM Monday
These are rain totals through 7 AM Wednesday
.
Breaking it down.
One disturbance will push into the region Thursday afternoon and night.
A few scattered showers and thunderstorms could develop as early as Thursday afternoon over mainly northern portions of southeast Missouri.
Chances of showers and thunderstorms will increase area-wide Thursday night. The higher probabilities will remain over southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. The further north and northwest you travel, the higher the probability of precipitation.
We will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms area-wide Friday into Friday night. A warm front will develop across our region and push northward. Chances of precipitation are usually higher along and north of warm fronts.
Once again, the chances will be higher across Missouri and Illinois vs the rest of the area.
If you have outdoor plans, then you will want to check the weather radars. I would not cancel plans. The rain probabilities have been fluctuating between 40% and 60%. Depending on your location.
On Saturday, a cold front will nudge into the region. The atmosphere will become unstable Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening. This will set the stage for a few intense thunderstorms.
I have been struggling with Saturday’s rain probabilities. Bouncing them between 40% and 60%.
We may have a few showers and thunderstorms the first half of the day. Increasing chances the second half of the day.
As far as outdoor plans go, I would not cancel them. I would, however, monitor the latest forecast numbers and radars. I suspect there will be precipitation on the radar.
The Storm Prediction Center has outlined our region for a risk of severe weather Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening. The primary concern will be damaging wind and hail. The tornado risk will be low.
Here is the current day four severe weather outlook from the SPC. They have outlined our area for a risk. Their next update will be tomorrow.
.
I have removed Sunday’s rain chances (during the day). At one time, I had scattered showers and thunderstorms Sunday.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms may return as early as Sunday night.
We will have on and off shower and thunderstorm chances Monday through Wednesday, as well. I can’t rule out severe thunderstorms. Locally heavy rain, as well.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
