48-hour forecast
.
.
Friday to Friday
1. Is lightning in the forecast? Yes. Lightning is possible Sunday into Monday. Peak chances being Sunday afternoon and night.
2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast? Monitor. A few storms could be severe Sunday afternoon and night. The overall risk is low, but if thunderstorms form they could produce a few reports of hail and wind. The tornado risk is low. It is possible that there will be enough clouds and ongoing precipitation to mitigate any risk of severe thunderstorms.
The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes
3. Is flash flooding in the forecast? Monitor. Locally heavy rain will be possible Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. Some localized flooding will be possible. This is especially true of areas that picked up three to six inches of rain over the past couple of weeks. Widespread flooding is unlikely.
4. Will the heat index top 100 degrees? No.
5. Is measurable snow or ice in the forecast? No.
6. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees? No.

Today through April 25th: I am watching Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. A cold front will push across the region. A few thunderstorms could produce wind and hail. The overall threat of severe weather is low.
.
.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

Forecast Discussion
Dry conditions both today and Saturday. Thankfully!
It will be much warmer today and Saturday. I know everyone has been waiting on this. Both days are the pick days of the weekend.
It will be windy, from time to time. Wind gusts may top 25 mph both days. If you are boating then you will want to use a little extra caution.
Temperatures will rise into the upper 70s to lower 80s area-wide! It will feel like spring outside. This should be our warmest two-day period of the spring, thus far. How about that! No complains.
Our next cold front will already be on the way by Sunday.
Expect morning sunshine with increasing afternoon clouds. Warm temperatures.
There could already be a few showers across southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois Sunday morning, but the bulk of this event will be later in the day into the overnight hours.
Some of the guidance has sped the front up by six to twelve hours. I have increased rain probabilities Sunday during the day. This is especially true for Missouri and Illinois.
Showers and thunderstorm chances will be with us Sunday evening and night. A period of widespread precipitation is likely. Locally heavy downpours are possible. Lightning, of course.
The Storm Prediction Center has outlined portions of the region for a marginal risk of severe weather Sunday afternoon and night. Primarily Missouri and Illinois.
Clouds and ongoing precipitation may keep the atmosphere stable. That would mitigate any severe weather risk.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue into Monday.
Precipitation chances will taper west to east Monday night and Tuesday. Perhaps a few remaining showers.
Rain totals today through next Tuesday. Broad-brushed.
.
Next week is shaping up to be cooler in the temperature department. Sorry! I know some of you would like the warm temperatures to remain.
Seems we can’t shake the cooler days and nights.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
