48-hour forecast

.

.

Tuesday to Tuesday

1. Is lightning in the forecast?  Yes.  Lightning is possible Wednesday and Wednesday night.  Lightning is possible Sunday into Monday.  Peak chances being Sunday night.

2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast?  Monitor.  At this time, the threat of severe weather appears minimal.  I continue to watch a strong cold front Sunday/Monday.  I can’t rule out stronger storms with it, but confidence in a severe weather risk remains low.

The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes

3. Is flash flooding in the forecast?  Not at this time.

4. Will the heat index top 100 degrees?  No.

5.  Is measurable snow or ice in the forecast?   No.

6. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees? No.

Today through April 25th:  At this time, the threat of severe weather remains low.  I am watching Sunday afternoon into Monday morning.  A stronger cold front will push across the region Sunday night.  I can’t rule out some strong thunderstorms, but the overall confidence in severe weather remains low.  Monitor updates.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   A bit warmer today.  Some sunshine.
    2.   Thickening  clouds tonight into Wednesday.
    3.   Scattered showers and thunderstorms Wednesday into Thursday.
    4.  Thunderstorms possible Saturday night into Sunday night.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

Forecast Discussion

I thought this graphic was interesting.

How many tornado warnings have been issued this year.

Mississippi and Alabama NWS offices have been quite busy.

.

We are waking up to sunshine and chilly temperatures.  Most of the region experienced lows in the 34 to 38 degree range.  Some patch frost has been reported.

The sun will help warm things up a little bit today.  Nothing extreme, but we will take what we can get.

Spring warmth has been slow to arrive this year.  Seems we keep having these cold shots.

Dated reference, but I think we need this lady to show up and exorcise our cold weather away.

Dry weather today. No weather concerns.

A slow-moving system will push into the region tonight and tomorrow.

Clouds will increase tonight.  I can’t rule out a late night shower or thunderstorm over southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois.  For the most part, the region will remain dry.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible Wednesday with increasing chances as we move deeper into the afternoon and evening hours.

Widespread showers and thunderstorms are likely Wednesday night.  I do not expect any severe weather.  That is the good news.  Some locally moderate rain.

A few showers and thunderstorms will linger into Thursday.  Somewhat warmer Thursday (even with the cloud cover).

Rain totals through Thursday (broad-brushed)

Double click on the images to enlarge them.

A nice warming trend Friday and Saturday.  Expect highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s.  How about that.  If we can hit 80 degrees both Friday and Saturday, then that will be the warmest two days of the spring, thus far.

Dry conditions both Friday and Saturday, that is the good news!  Expect quite a bit of sunshine.

If you have outdoor plans Friday and Saturday, then you are in luck this weekend.

There could be some gusty winds from time to time.  Keep that in mind if you are boating.

Dry conditions should continue into Saturday night.

A strong cold front will approach the region Sunday and Monday.  I can’t completely rule out a thunderstorm over mainly southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois Sunday afternoon, but for the most part it should remain dry.

Shower and thunderstorm chances will increase Sunday night into Monday.  Widespread showers and thunderstorms are likely.  Locally heavy rain will be possible.

At this time, the threat of severe weather appears minimal.  It may not be zero.  Let’s monitor this time-period.  Just in case CAPE numbers come in higher (instability).

There is some question as to how fast this system will exit.  The EC model guidance continues precipitation chances into Tuesday.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
