Today through April 15th: I am closely monitoring next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Warmer air will push into the region.  Dew points will also be on the rise.  Some of the thunderstorms could be strong.   Monitor updates over the coming days.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Some sunshine today.  Cool temperatures.
    2.   Colder tonight into Saturday night.
    3.   A chance of rain and rain/snow showers tonight and Friday.
    4.   Patchy frost possible Saturday night.
    5.   Thunderstorms next week.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

Forecast Discussion

A dry day ahead of us.  Finally.  I know many of you are tired of the clouds and rain.

The good news is that we will have some sunshine today.  Temperatures will only be in the 50s.  Not overly warm, especially for April.

Clouds will increase this afternoon into tonight.

A large upper level low and trough will push into the region tonight and tomorrow.

It will once again be in the thirties tonight for overnight lows.

Friday morning lows.

You can see that on this satellite view.

Notice the swirl to the clouds to our north.  That will pivot southward tonight and tomorrow.

Another view

You can also see it on the 500 mb chart (several thousand feet aloft).  The colors represent vorticity (not showers or thunderstorms).

It pivots southward tonight and then pushes away from the area Friday night.

This will bring clouds, rain and rain/snow showers, gusty winds, and chilly temperatures.  Yes, not the best news.

The snow won’t accumulate, of course.  Just a novelty flake here and there.

The good news is that we won’t have severe thunderstorms with this system.

There will be a chance of a few rumbles of thunder Friday.  I can’t rule out some pea to dime size hail, as well.

Winds will gust above 20 mph.  That will make it feel colder.

The precipitation will push off to the east Friday evening and night.  That will leave us with a few clouds and temperatures falling into the thirties.

We will likely avoid frost Friday night, because of the gusty winds.

Saturday morning lows.

Saturday will be dry and chilly.  Gusty winds, as well.

Lows Saturday night will drop into the thirties.  Winds should subside.  The leaves open the possibility of some patchy frost late Saturday night and Sunday morning.  Temperatures will likely flirt with freezing over our northern counties.

Either way, a cold night.

Temperatures will begin to warm Sunday.  With some sunshine, that should feel quite a bit better than Friday and Saturday’s conditions.

Once again, same as last week, Sunday is our pick day of the weekend.

Another unsettled period of weather will develop Sunday night and continue into at Wednesday.

On and off shower and thunderstorm chances will develop Sunday night.  That will continue Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

I am going to have to closely monitor this time period for severe thunderstorms.

The risk appears highest Wednesday.

Dew points (moisture) will be on the rise next week.  That is one ingredient in severe weather.  Temperatures will be warmer, as well.

Those two combined will make for unstable conditions.

It appears that a few disturbances will push across the region next week.

The primary/main cold front will likely sweep through the region Wednesday.  The cold front would likely provide the highest chance of severe thunderstorms.

These events are still several days away.

The Storm Prediction Center has outlined Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for the threat of severe weather in the central United States.

These outlooks will be fine-tuned as we draw closer to each time period.

Let’s keep an eye on it.

Monday’s severe weather outlook.

Monday’s severe threat should stay to our west.

Tuesday’s severe weather outlook.

Most likely the severe risk will stay to our west, but we will need to monitor this time period.

Wednesday’s severe weather outlook

Wednesday may deliver our greatest risk of severe weather.  For now, the SPC has outlined our western counties.  I suspect this may shift eastward.  Monitor updates.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
