Forecast Discussion
We will have a mix of sun and clouds today. A few showers, as well. Chilly temperatures.
Rainfall totals today will range from 0.00″ to 0.20″. Not much. More of a nuisance than anything else.
Rain chances will be highest north of the Ohio River.
5 AM radar shows precipitation near the St Louis, Missouri, area. The blue represents snow.
We could have some cold air funnels today.
What are cold air funnels?
A funnel cloud is aloft. It is not on the ground. When a funnel touches the ground, it becomes a tornado.
These are not the same as supercell tornadoes or QLCS tornadoes. Those type of tornadoes can cause a lot of damage.
Cold air funnels typically do not touch the ground. They typically do not cause any problems. They are more of a novelty.
Cold air funnels form beneath showers or weak thunderstorms when the air aloft is especially cold. The funnels are most common in the fall and spring when the sun is able to heat up the lower levels of the atmosphere, causing convection to bubble up and form showers, but temperatures around 15,000 to 20,000 feet above the ground are quite cold. Cold air funnels are usually harmless, but on rare occasions they can touch down and cause EF-0 level (winds up to 85 mph) tornado damage.
What do they look like?
Again, they rarely touch the ground.
Dry conditions tonight into Friday. Again, cool temperatures.
A fast moving system will clip our region Friday night. It will bring a few more clouds and perhaps a light shower near the IL/IN and KY/IN state line. Perhaps into the Pennyrile area of western Kentucky. Rain totals will be less than 0.05″.
Dry weather Saturday into Monday night.
It will be chilly this weekend with the coldest air arriving Saturday night. It is during this time-frame that a few locations could experience a light freeze. Frost possible. Not unusual for this time of the year.
I am watching a larger system next week. Model guidance has been all over the place with the exact timing of the highest rain chances.
At one point, it appeared Tuesday would be wet. Now, guidance is pushing that off to Tuesday night into Wednesday night.
I will continue to fine-tune that portion of the forecast.
Plan on at least some shower and thunderstorm chances towards the middle of next week.
At this time, it does appear locally heavy rain will be possible with that event. It is too soon to know if severe weather will be a concern. Monitor updates, as always.
