.

Today through February 20th  I am watching a strong cold front next Thursday.   There could be thunderstorms with this system.  Depending on the storm track, some of the thunderstorms could be intense.  Monitor updates moving forward.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

.

Tomorrow’s severe weather outlook.

Weather Discussion

    1.     Cold front arrives today.
    2.     Widely scattered showers.
    3.     A few snow showers tonight/tomorrow (low-chances).
    4.     Another cold front Sunday.
    5.     Widespread rain arrives towards the middle of next week.  Some storms possible, as well.

.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

.

Weather Discussion

A cold front will push across our region today.  It will bring increasing clouds and some widely scattered showers.  Shower chances will be higher over southeast Missouri and southern Illinois vs areas further south.  Rain totals of 0.10″ or less.  Not much.

You can see the cold front on this surface map.  This is Friday mornings weather map.

You can see it will be well south of the area by tomorrow.

.

The big weather story will be the warm air ahead of the front.  Widespread 50s across the region today.  A few locations will hit the 60 degree mark!  That won’t last.

The cold front will push from northwest to southeast across the region as we move through today and this evening.  This will deliver colder air.

Both Saturday and Sunday will be colder.

A few light snow showers will be possible tonight and early tomorrow morning and again along a fast moving weaker cold front Sunday.  Little or no accumulation with these snow showers.

You can see the drop in temperatures on these two animations.

.

Monday and Tuesday will be dry and cool.  No weather concerns.

Our next big weather maker will be a strong cold front associated with an area of low pressure that should pass over our region or to our north.

This weather system will bring widespread showers and thunderstorms to the region by Wednesday night into Thursday night.  Peak rain chances will likely arrive Thursday.

Locally heavy rain will be possible with this system.  Thunderstorms may also accompany the cold front.

There are mixed signals on the threat of severe weather.  A bit too early to be thinking about forecasting severe thunderstorms.  I will keep an eye on trends.

Dew points will be key to the severe weather threat.  Typically, during the Month of February, I would want to see dew points in the upper 50s or 60s before forecasting severe thunderstorms.  It might be close.

The GFS model.  Dew point forecast does show us reaching those numbers next Thursday.  Other model data keeps those numbers further south of our local area.

Something to monitor moving forward.

.

One thing is certain.  There will be widespread precipitation with this system.  Some locations may top an inch of rain.

The GFS model shows that nicely.  You can see the red L in Iowa.  That is the area of low pressure.  The green and yellow represent rain.

This graphic is next Thursday.

Colder air will arrive behind the cold front next Thursday night and Friday.

Some of the guidance shows the rain ending as snow showers.  A bit too early to know if that will happen.  I will keep an eye on the track of the center of low pressure.  If it were to track further south then the chances of the rain ending as snow would increase.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
