Today through January 16th: Severe weather is not anticipated.
.
.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

- Cold night ahead.
- Chilly start to the week.
- Monitoring precipitation chances later this week.
Weather advice:
Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages. We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner. Thus, we made the app. See links at the bottom of the page.

Weather Discussion
We are waking up to cold temperatures.
Here is what the temperatures look like across the region.
That is quite the change from 24 hours ago. Here is the 24-hour temperature change map.
Highs today will range from the upper 30s to lower 40s. A chilly day.
Lows tonight will again be cold.
.
A slow warming trend will arrive Wednesday into Friday. Expect highs mostly in the 40s Wednesday through Friday.
I continue to monitor a system that could bring some showers to the region Friday and Saturday. Peak rain chances should be Friday night. That is how it looks, for now at least.
Model guidance has not been in agreement on the details of the weekend system. Some show a bit more rain than others. I continue to monitor trends.
It may be cold enough for a rain/snow mix over northern portions of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. For now, accumulation chances appear small. Again, I will be monitoring trends.
Either way, this does not look like a significant weather event. A faster moving weak system.
Here is what the EC model shows for the weekend system. A bit more snow with it.
It is a bit further south with the track of the low vs the GFS model guidance.
And the GFS is weaker. Not as much precipitation. It is a bit further north with the track of the area of low pressure.
.
WPC/NOAA rainfall totals are forecast to be low. Again, whatever does fall should be centered on Friday and Saturday.
.
At this time, I am not tracking any major storm systems.
There are hints in the guidance for several cold snaps the last two weeks of January. Long range models, during the winter months, can be quite chaotic. Thus, I don’t put much faith in them. With that said, a lot of signals are pointing towards a few shots of much below normal temperatures and perhaps some wintry precipitation.
I will continue to monitor trends in the guidance.
.
Click here if you would like to return to the top of the page.
Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
- The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
