Thursday to Thursday

1. Is lightning in the forecast?  Yes.  Sunday.  Lightning will be possible.  I am watching Tuesday.

The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes

3. Is flash flooding in the forecast?  No.

4. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees? No.

5. Will the heat index top 100 degrees?  No.

6. Will there be accumulating snow and ice in the forecast?  Not at this time.  I am monitoring a system next Tuesday.  I can’t completely rule out a wintry mix.  For now confidence is low.

Today through December 7th:  I am monitoring Sunday afternoon.  A few storms could be intense.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.    Mild with near record temperatures in some counties today and tomorrow.
    2.    Isolated showers Friday evening.
    3.    Cooler Saturday through Monday.
    4.    Widespread rain Sunday and again Tuesday into Wednesday.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

.

Weather Discussion

Well, we had a bit more rain yesterday than anticipated.  Further south, as well.  I had to scramble to update the forecast.  Sometimes that happens!

Rain totals will mostly in the 0.01″ to 0.20″ range.  There were even a few embedded thunderstorms with small hail.

The big weather news over the next 48 hours will be the warm temperatures.  WELL above average temperatures with near record highs in some counties.  I would not be surprised if a few records fall.  Anomalously warm.

It will be warmer today in the temperature department.  See the daily forecast at the top of the page.  This mild weather will continue Thursday and Friday.  Thursday and Friday are likely to be the warmest days of the week.  WELL above seasonal levels.

Friday

Temperature anomaly maps for today, tomorrow, and Friday.  How many degrees above average will temperatures be?  Here you go!  Average highs are in the lower 50s.

Thursday anomalies

Friday anomalies

A cold front arrives Friday night.  This front could produce isolated showers, as well.  Most of the area will remain dry.

Here is the official rainfall forecast.  As you can see, not much is expected.  This is for Friday evening.

The front will bring much cooler air into the region.  Saturday, Sunday, and Monday will be quite a bit cooler.  Seasonal temperatures.  It will feel colder than it actually is (since we are experiencing several mild days ahead of the front).

Another front arrives Sunday. The trend over the past few days is lending itself towards more precipitation vs less.  Expect widespread rain Sunday and Sunday evening.  Tapering Sunday night.

Yet another front will arrive Tuesday into Wednesday.  Models show widespread precipitation developing with this system, as well.

The models show a wintry mix for portions of the region.   Too early for certainties on precipitation type.  It is possible that the rain begins as a mix before changing to all rain.  I will be monitoring trends and will hopefully know a bit more tomorrow.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
  3. The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
