Today through October 10th: A few storms could produce hail and high winds this afternoon. There are some limiting factors for severe weather, but there may be just enough instability and wind shear to produce a few reports of hail and gusty winds.
.
.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

- Unsettled 48 hours.
- The weekend is currently forecast to be mostly on the nice side.
- Mild temperatures.
Weather advice:
Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages. We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner. Thus, we made the app. See links at the bottom of the page.

Weather Discussion
A large upper level low is pushing across our region today. You can see it nicely on radar. Rain is moving southeast to northwest. Remember, low pressure rotates counter-clockwise. Thus, the rain is pushing in from odd directions.
Shower and thunderstorm chances will be with all of today and then some additional chances tonight into Thursday.
There now appears to be just enough instability for a couple of the thunderstorms to be intense this afternoon and evening. The primary concern would be quarter size hail and 50 mph wind gusts. There will be some low level wind shear. I can’t rule out some cold air funnels or tropical funnels. These typically don’t cause problems, but let’s keep an eye on it.
The dark green zone is the area of interest for severe weather later today.
Rain chances will slowly diminish tonight into Friday.
By Friday, the rain chances will be mostly confined to southeast Illinois and western Kentucky. Even there, chances will be on the lower-end.
A weak system could produce a couple of showers Friday night and early Saturday morning over our northern counties. Once again, these will be on the lower-end of the range.
Saturday and Sunday should be nice.
Another cold front will approach our region late Sunday night into Monday. This will bring some additional showers and thunderstorms to the region.
Our next system appears to be late next week. Some showers and thunderstorms again possible. Perhaps around Thursday/Friday. The system has slowed some. Another one the following week.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
- The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
