Today through September 11th:  Widespread severe weather is not anticipated.  A few storms could be strong this afternoon and tonight over northern portions of southeast Missouri and northern portions of southern Illinois.  Overall, the risk is minimal.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Monitoring shower and thunderstorm chances.
    2.   Warm temperatures.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

.

Weather Discussion

The primary weather concern, over the coming days, will be a cold front advancing into the area from the north.  Then, the remnants of Hurricane Nicholas.

For today, we will remain under high pressure.  A few showers and thunderstorms may bubble up during the afternoon hours. Generally, however, the area will remain dry today.

Shower and thunderstorm chances will increase this evening into tonight across the northern half of the region.  That means higher chances over southeast Missouri, much of southern Illinois, and northwest Kentucky.  This is where the cold front will interact with the warm and humid air pushing northward from the Gulf of Mexico.

A few of the thunderstorms could be strong with gusty winds.  Locally heavy downpours, as well.

The front will sag southward Wednesday.  That will push showers and thunderstorms deeper into our local area.  The precipitation will taper north to south as we move through the day.

Thursday into the weekend will likely deliver warm temperatures and widely scattered showers and thunderstorms.  There is a chance that activity increase Sunday as some of the hurricane remnants spread a tad further north.

Models aren’t in complete agreement on the rain probabilities Sunday.  I went around 40% (for now).

Rain totals are going to vary.  Do not be surprised if some locations receive less than 0.25″.  I would actually not be surprised if some locations receive no measurable rain. Other locations will pick up 0.50″ to 1.00″.   Thunderstorms can always produce locally higher totals, of course.  Same as recent weeks and months.

Another cold front will push towards the region Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.  That will likely bring a band of showers and thunderstorms with it, as well.

.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
  3. The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
