7-day forecast for southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee.
This is a BLEND for the region. See the detailed region by region forecast further down in this post.
THE FORECAST IS GOING TO VARY FROM LOCATON TO LOCATION.
SEE THE DAILY DETAILS (REGION BY REGION) FURTHER DOWN IN THIS BLOG UPDATE.
48-hour forecast
.
.
Friday to Friday
1. Is lightning in the forecast? Yes. A chance today through next Wednesday. I will monitor next Thursday.
2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast? Monitor. A few storms could produce strong and gusty winds. We will need to monitor the possible tropical storm/hurricane moving towards the Gulf of Mexico this weekend into next week. If it moves into our region then severe weather would be possible.
The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes
3. Is flash flooding in the forecast? Monitor. Storms this time of the year can produce heavy rain.
4. Will the heat index top 100 degrees? Yes. Heat index values of 100 to 105 degrees today. Saturday heat index values will likely be around 100 degrees, as well.
5. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees above zero? No.
6. Will there be accumulating snow and ice in the forecast? No.

Today through August 30th: Widespread severe weather is not anticipated.
.
.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

- Hot again today.
- A few thunderstorms.
- Watching Tropical Storm Ida.

Weather Discussion
Another hot day for the region. Expect highs in the lower 90s. Heat index values will top 100, once again. Muggy air. Air you wear.
This warm weather will continue into Saturday. Perhaps a few degrees cooler. Still, it will be hot and muggy.
We will have a chance of scattered thunderstorms today through Sunday. Widespread shower and thunderstorm activity is unlikely. A few locally heavy storms.
Slow moving storms could drop an inch of rain in 30 minutes. Other locations will remain dry. Same as recent weeks.
Temperatures Sunday will be a few degrees cooler than today and Saturday. That is mainly because of an increase in cloud cover. It will remain humid/muggy.
Shower and thunderstorm activity will increase by Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
A cold front will nudge into the region Monday. This will help increase the chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of those storms could produce wind gusts of 40 mph and locally heavy rain. Lightning, of course.
We will then be monitoring the tropics. As you may have heard, Tropical Storm Ida has formed in the Caribbean. This system will strengthen over the next few days. Scroll down for a longer discussion on that.
Today
Tomorrow
.
You can see the tropical storm on satellite. That red blog in the Caribbean is Tropical Storm Ida.
.
Tropical Storm Ida.
Guidance is pointing to the heaviest rain remaining to our south and east. With that said, some increase in shower and thunderstorm activity is possible in our region Monday (along an incoming cold front) and then Tuesday into Wednesday. Lower chances Thursday and Friday.
The focus of the hurricane is forecast to be to our south and east. We will need to monitor the Kentucky/Tennessee state line zone. Perhaps Ida will bring a bit more shower/thunderstorm activity to that area.
Here is the official National Hurricane Center forecast track for Ida. Notice the cone still includes us. That is the cone of uncertainty. Where the system could track.
The center point is the most likely track. As always, monitor updates.
S stands for tropical storm. H stands for hurricane. D stands for a tropical depression.
Here is the official NOAA/WPC forecast for rainfall totals.
Notice how the heaviest rain stays just south and east of our area. You can see how it curves north and then east. That is the track forecast.
We will need to monitor the Kentucky/Tennessee state line area. Perhaps somewhat higher totals there.
Less as you travel north and west.
Either way, the bulk of the system is currently forecast to remain south and east of my forecast counties. As always, monitor updates. There could still be adjustments in the final track. Remember, it is still out over the Caribbean.
If you have travel plans to Texas or the Gulf of Mexico then you will want to closely monitor the track of this system. It has the potential to increase in intensity. Perhaps quite a bit. A category two or greater hurricane can’t be ruled out.
I occasionally show you ensemble model data.
.
The more of these lines that match, the higher the confidence in the forecast. You can see the spaghetti plots (ensembles) are showing a fairly narrow area of concern. With time, this window will narrow even more.
Monitor updates moving forward.

When we look at the primary models we can see where they track the system.
Notice all of the models keep the core of the system to our south and east. That is the current going forecast.
That does not mean we won’t have some local impacts. We may see an increase in shower and thunderstorm activity Monday into Wednesday. The heavier rain, however, should stay to our south and east.
We will need to monitor the Kentucky/Tennessee border area in case the system is slightly further north.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
- The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
