Today through August 24th:  Widespread severe weather is not anticipated.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   The heat is on.
    2.   Watching a weak cold front late this week.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

Weather Discussion

The only complication in the forecast is today and this evening.

Last night and this morning, a complex of thunderstorms formed over Iowa and is pushing southeast.  Most of the models do not show this area of precipitation.

This system may bring some showers and thunderstorms to southeast Missouri and southern Illinois later today and this evening.  Confidence, however, is rather low in the final outcome.  I went ahead and added a chance of thunderstorms to the forecast.

Chances are higher as you travel north and northwest towards St Louis.  How much of the system holds together is a question.

If the system falls apart then I don’t expect there will be any additional concerns today other than the heat index values topping 100 degrees.

It was an active weekend for the region with very heavy rain over some counties.  Some locations measured more than seven inches of rain.  Others received no measurable rain.

Sadly, many people in western Tennessee lost their lives when a flash flood occurred over 10 to 17 inches of rain.  That was southeast of my forecast area.  Our prayers go out to everyone impacted.

Let me show you some of the radar indicated rain totals.

I measured over 3.5″ at the Weather Observatory in Massac County, Illinois.  Most of this fell in a three to four hour window Saturday morning.

The Tennessee rain totals broke all time state records.  It was also likely the deadliest flash flood in more than 35 years in the USA.

It is going to be hot and muggy over the coming days.  The recent rains did help our heat cause.  This will make it feel even hotter/muggier.

Heat index values through Friday will likely be in the 100 to 110 degree range with locally higher numbers.

The NAM is showing that

.

Late in the week we will need to monitor shower and thunderstorm chances.  A series of disturbances may help pop our storm chances into the scattered category.  If a complex of storms forms then likely category.  For now, I have lower end chances.

I am watching the tropics over the coming 14 to 24 days, as well.  We will need to see if a system moves into the Gulf of Mexico and eventually enhances our precipitation chances.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
  3. The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
