48-hour forecast

.

.

Wednesday to Wednesday

1. Is lightning in the forecast?  Yes.   Scattered lightning today through at least Sunday.  Another chance towards the middle of next week along an incoming cold front.

2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast?  Monitor.  Widespread severe weather appears unlikely, but monitor updates.  An isolated report of wind damage can’t be ruled out.

The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes

3. Is flash flooding in the forecast? Monitor.  Slow moving storms could produce pockets of one to three inches of rain in less than an hour.  Avoid flooded roadways.  Similar pattern as recent weeks.

4. Will the heat index top 100 degrees?  Yes.  Heat index values will approach 100 degrees Sunday.  Heat index at or above 100 degrees will be possible Monday into Wednesday.

5. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees above zero? No.

6. Will there be accumulating snow and ice in the forecast?  No.

Today through August 22nd:  A few thunderstorms could produce strong and gusty winds over the coming days.  A low-end severe weather risk.  Storms could also produce torrential rain and frequent lightning.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Thunderstorm chances increasing.
    2.   Heat returns for the weekend into next week.
    3.   Watching a cold front towards the middle of next week.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

Locally intense thunderstorms are possible over the coming days.  If thunder roars then head indoors.  Avoid flooded roadways if they develop.

.

Weather Discussion

We will have an increase in shower and thunderstorm activity today.  The bulk of the activity will develop across the southern half of southeast Missouri, extreme southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and northwest Tennessee.

In other words, the further south you travel the higher the chance of showers and thunderstorms.

You can see what radar looked like at 7 AM.  Showers and storms were slowly moving northeast.  See the live radar links at the bottom of the blog.

.

I tried to hit certain time-periods with higher rain chances (you can see that at the top of the page with the % numbers).

Thunderstorm activity is forecast to increase today, tomorrow, and Friday.  With that said, don’t be surprised in some locations once again miss out on the rain.  Same as the past two months.  Hit and miss heavy showers and thunderstorms.

A few of the thunderstorms could produce strong and gusty winds, frequent lightning, torrential downpours, and pea size hail.  An isolated severe thunderstorm can’t be ruled out.

There will be quite a bit of moisture in the atmosphere.  That means locally heavy downpours are likely to occur.  Some spots will pick up one to three inches of rain between now and Sunday.  Same as the last eight weeks.  Hit and miss big totals from slow moving thunderstorms.

Temperatures will increase by Saturday and Sunday into the upper 80s and around 90 to the lower 90s by Monday through Wednesday.  Muggy weather returns.

Here are the heat index values that are forecast for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (cooler by Thursday behind a cold front).

.

Tuesday

.

Wednesday

.

And Thursday (possible cold front towards the middle of next week)

.

Some of the guidance is showing another cold front next Wednesday and Thursday.  If that happens, then thunderstorm chances will ramp up.  Cooler behind the front by late next week.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
  3. The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
