Today through July 4th:  A few storms, over the coming days, could produce locally heavy rain, frequent lightning, and gusty wind.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Thunderstorm chances are increasing.
    2.   Locally heavy rain.
    3.   A nice weekend on tap for the region.

.

Weather advice:

The primary concern over the coming days will be locally heavy downpours and lightning.  Gusty wind near the most intense storms could bring down a few tree-limbs.

Discussion

Another warm and humid day is on tap for the region.

We also have increasing shower and thunderstorm chances today into Thursday night.  Tapering rain chances Friday.  A dry weekend.

At the surface we have a cold front to our northwest.  This front will sag its way slowly south/southeast over the next 12 to 24 hours.  This will be the focus of numerous showers and thunderstorms.

Portions of the region picked up heavy rain Tuesday afternoon.  Some spots received over an inch of rain.  There were even a couple of severe thunderstorms that produced some tree limb damage.  Not unusual in this soupy air-mass where downburst winds can occur.

Shower and thunderstorm activity will become more numerous today.  Locally heavy rain, lightning, and gusty wind will accompany the thunderstorms.  I can’t rule out isolated flash flooding where storms are at their most intense.

See the live radars to track the storms as they form.

Both today and tomorrow will bring a low-end severe thunderstorm risk, as well.  The concern would be damaging wind gusts in excess of 55 mph.  Those winds can bring down tree limbs.

Rain totals will vary greatly.  This is usually the case during July.  Some locations will remain dry today.  Other locations will likely pick up an inch or two of rain in less than thirty-minutes.

Our rain chances will peak Thursday.  This is when the front will push across the region.  Locally heavy rain is likely.  The atmosphere is loaded with moisture.  It won’t take much to produce excessive rainfall in a few locations.  You can expect some thunderstorms to produce an inch of rain in less than 15 minutes.  Downpours.

The great news is that it now appears shower and thunderstorm chances will begin to diminish Thursday night and Friday.  Coming to an end Friday night.

Saturday and Sunday will be dry and cooler.  It is forecast to be a nice holiday weekend.  There might be some afternoon clouds from time to time as the surface heats and cold air aloft moves in.  That can produce clouds.

Monday should be dry, as well.  I am watching Tuesday for an increase in temperatures and dew points.  That may lead to some showers and thunderstorms.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
  3. The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
