Today through July 4th: A few storms, over the coming days, could produce locally heavy rain, frequent lightning, and gusty wind.
.
.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion
-
- Warm and humid.
- Scattered thunderstorms.
- Late week cold front
.
Weather advice:
The primary concern over the coming days will be locally heavy downpours and lightning.
Discussion
We are under the influence of high pressure off the southeast coast. This is keeping a warm and muggy air-mass across our region.
A cold front/stationary front is situated to our northwest.
That front has been the focus of extremely heavy rain and tornadoes over the past few days. Some locations have recorded 6 to 15″ of rain. Thankfully, the front stayed away from our region.
With that said, some of us need rain. The gusty wind has been drying the soil.
The front will sag southward Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. This should increase our rain chances.
A tropical depression is moving into the southeast United States. This will likely be absorbed by the cold front. This depression will spread moisture into our region later this week. That could enhance rain totals, a bit. Let’s keep an eye on it.
Watch this PWAT animation. See the higher moisture off the southeast coast. It then moves west and northwest into our area. It is a little hard to see here, but if you look/watch closely you can see it.
If the front moves through the region Friday night then we will dry out. That will usher in cooler and less humid air for Saturday and Sunday.
At this time, it appears the front will push through the region. If it stalls then rain chances will continue into the holiday weekend. For now, I have the front moving south.
There will be a chance of wrap-around clouds Saturday and Sunday over at least southern Illinois and western Kentucky. There could even be a few pop-up showers because of the cold air aloft mingling with the warmer surface temperatures. This is more common during the autumn months.
For now, I have low-end shower/thunderstorm chances Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
The long range is below average temperatures. This is because of that cold front. Beyond this range also shows below average temperatures.
Let’s look at the current soil moisture from May into June. Some of us need rain.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
- The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
