Today through May 18th: Severe weather is not anticipated.

.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion
-
- Complicated seven-day forecast.
- Trends are a bit wetter.
- Placement of the front is in question.
There have been southward adjustments in the rain totals for the weekend.
At one point, it appeared the heaviest rain would stay well to our north. Over the last 24-hours there has been a southward shift in the front.
If this continues, then I will need to increase the percent chances of rain further south. I am monitoring trends. For now, I did increase rain chances a bit further south and a bit earlier in the weekend.
If you have weekend plans, then I would not cancel them. I would, however, monitor updated forecast numbers. There will likely be some rain on radar beginning Friday night and continuing well into next week. There will absolutely be time-periods with higher rain chances. Some of the days will need to be ironed out as we move forward.
For now, I went with a general percentage number Monday through Wednesday. I suspect there will be time periods with greater rain coverage. Monitor updates.
I have lightning in the forecast Sunday into next week. For now, there are no clear signals for severe thunderstorms. It is late May. Typically, this is our peak severe weather time-period during the spring months. Monitor updates, as always.
If one of the impulses comes in stronger, then I will need to mention strong thunderstorms.
With all of that said, the forecast has a lower than normal confidence level. This is especially true of Saturday and Sunday.
In additional to the above, there will be a warming trend Friday into next week, as well. No solid hot days in the forecast. It will, however, be warmer than recent days.
Eastern Kentucky had frost this morning!
Look at the significant differences in rain totals through Sunday 1 PM. Different models have different ideas. This is complicating the overall forecast.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
- The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
