Today through April 18th.  Severe weather is not anticipated.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.  Showers ending today.
    2.  Cooler than average temperatures well into next week.
    3.  Monitoring frost chances.

The region is currently under the influence of a fast moving weak short-wave.  This is producing light rain across much of the region.

Rain totals will be light, for the most part.  Radar did show slightly higher totals over portions of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois.

There was an east to west band of showers.  I did not notice any lightning on satellite, but there could be a rumble or two of thunder.

You can see those heavier showers on this 7 AM radar screen grab.

.

This system will quickly move off to the east.  That will leave the rest of the day dry (once it exits).

We are in a rather messy upper level flow.

That means a few more chances of showers over the coming days.

One of those events will arrive tonight and tomorrow.  This time, it will be a bit further south.  That means the rain chances will be higher across southern Missouri, western Kentucky, and northwest Tennessee.

Once again, I can’t completely rule out a rumble of thunder, but severe weather is not a concern.

Yet another fast moving weak system will move across the region Friday night and Saturday.  A couple of showers will be possible with it, as well.

We are under a cool temperature pattern and that is also going to continue.  As a matter of fact, cool or coolish weather will be with us into next week.

Temperatures may dip back down into the 30s next week (for overnight lows).  I continue to monitor frost chances.  Too soon to know if that is a concern.

Here is the GFS model temperature anomaly animation.  Watch just how long the below average temperatures continue.

.

The summer forecast has been updated.  June through August.

Drought concerns are significant for a large portion of the United States.  Whether that drought impacts our region will need to be monitored.

Typically, severe thunderstorms surround the ring of drought.

I am monitoring to see where the heat ridge sets up shop.  Large thunderstorm complexes will impact areas around the edge of the ridge.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
  3. The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
