7-day forecast for southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee.
This is a BLEND for the region. See the detailed region by region forecast further down in this post.
The entire blog is updated after 3 PM each day. Some adjustments may be made during the morning hours.
The short/long range graphics are updated before 9 AM.

Sunday to Sunday
1. Are accumulating snow or ice in the forecast? Monitor. I am watching Wednesday night into Friday. Rain could mix with or change to freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Confidence in accumulating snow is currently low. The most likely time frame would be late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning over southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. Warmer air then pushes northward Thursday changing everything to rain.
2. Is lightning in the forecast? Yes. Isolated lightning Wednesday and Wednesday night. Perhaps Thursday night, as well.
3. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast? Not at this time, but monitor updates.
* The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes
4. Is flash flooding in the forecast? Not at this time.
6. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees above zero? Possible. I am watching Thursday night into the weekend. Wind chill values will be determined by a second storm system Thursday and Friday. If that develops then colder air may push into the region with gusty winds.

Today through December 31st: I will be monitoring a storm system that pushes northward from the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday into Thursday night. For now, I have a few storms in the forecast. Monitor updates.
.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

Weather advice:
There is a chance of locally heavy rain Wednesday into Thursday.
There is a chance of a wintry mix late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. Mainly over southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. That would then change to rain Thursday late morning into the evening hours.
Monitor updates moving forward.

Weather Discussion
-
- A few showers tonight.
- Dry Monday into Monday night.
- Our next system arrives Tuesday and lingers through the week.
.
It has been a windy weekend across the region. Numerous reporting stations had gusts above 30 mph today. Temperatures today have been warmer than normal, as well.
Southerly winds will do that.
You can see the 3 PM temperature map (Sunday afternoon).
Rather pleasant for the end of December.
.
A cold front will push across the region tonight. That means a few showers. The rain will end before it turns cold enough for snow or ice.
Monday will be cool. High temperatures will be in the 40s.
The big weather story will be a complex weather system that will bring clouds to the region Tuesday and increasing rain chances Tuesday night into at least Thursday. Perhaps into Friday.
There will be plenty of moisture with this system. Locally heavy rain is a good bet. Mainly Wednesday and Wednesday night.
PWAT values show high numbers for late December. PWAT is a measure of moisture in the entire atmosphere.
This chart is for Wednesday evening. It simply means locally heavy rain will be possible as there is plenty of moisture to tap into.
.
Rain totals of one to two inches are likely between Tuesday night and Thursday night. A clap of thunder will be possible, as well.
You can see the WPC rainfall totals forecast. It shows the potential of two to four inches over portions of the region. Something worth monitoring. There could be some water issues if this verifies.
Colder air arrives Wednesday night and Thursday morning and the rain may change to freezing rain, sleet, and snow over portions of the region.
This would be more likely over portions of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. Still some time to work out the finer details.
If there is a wintry mix, it will be short-lived.
The wintry mix will change to all rain Thursday late morning into the afternoon hours from south to north. Locally heavy rain is possible Thursday and Thursday night.
Colder Friday into the weekend behind our storm system.
Bottom line: The best chance of a wintry mix will be late Wednesday night/Thursday morning over southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. Changing to all rain Thursday into Thursday night.
Otherwise, this is mostly a rain event for the region.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
- The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
