Today through October 28th: A few storms could be intense Friday and Friday evening. The main concern will be gusty wind and small hail. A low-end severe threat. Ingredients are marginal for true severe weather.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

Weather Discussion
-
- Cold front with showers and thunderstorms.
- Cooler Saturday.
- Another series of disturbances Sunday into Wednesday. On and off showers/thunderstorms.
.
A strong cold front is pushing into the region. This front will deliver scattered morning showers and thunderstorms and then an increasing chance of a band of thunderstorms late morning into the afternoon.
We will also have gusty winds today.
Temperatures will fall through the day from west to east. As a matter of fact, temperatures will fall into the 50s over southeast Missouri and southern Illinois by late morning and afternoon. It may take a bit longer over western Kentucky and northwestern Tennessee.
Click to enlarge the images and animations.
Here is the temperature forecast for today. You can see the drop.
.
Showers and thunderstorms will push off to the east this evening. That will leave us with mostly cloud sky conditions. Perhaps some patchy drizzle overnight.
Saturday will be cooler and breezy. Clouds will linger. I can’t rule out some patchy drizzle. There may be some clearing late in the day over our northern counties. Closer to I64.
Clouds will linger into Saturday night.
The Sunday into Wednesday time-frame will be made up of a series of fronts and disturbances.
Most of Sunday will be dry. Late in the day a few showers and thunderstorms may approach southeast Missouri. The rest of the area is currently forecast to remain dry. I will keep an eye on moisture trends. Sometimes these systems pop a few showers well ahead of the front.
A strong cold front will push into the region Sunday and linger into Monday night.
Showers and thunderstorms will increase in coverage and intensity Sunday night and Monday.
The heaviest rain will be over southeast Missouri and southern Illinois Sunday night. It will then spread eastward into western Kentucky and western Tennessee.
Monday is shaping up to be wet. Locally heavy rain will be possible.
The heaviest rain totals will be near and north of the cold front. I will need to monitor the exact position.
WPC rainfall totals forecast.
The next 72 hours and then the next seven days.

Through Friday 7 AM. These tend to be a bit broad-brushed. You get the general idea.

Snow may fall across parts of Missouri. That will stay to the west northwest of my forecast counties! Just a sign that winter is not far away.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
