An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming day

  1.  Above normal temperatures to continue (and increase)
  2.  Fog
  3.  More rain in the forecast
  4.  Major pattern shift in the cards?

Thursday night into Friday night
Confidence:  HIGH

Temperatures will remain WELL above normal through the weekend.

We will have some showers and perhaps thunderstorms lingering into Thursday evening.  Rain should diminish through the night.  Fog will likely develop tonight.  The fog could be dense, at times.  Keep that in mind.

Mild temperatures tonight.  Lows on Friday morning will range from 48 to 54 degrees.  Normal low temperatures are in the lower 20’s.  This is a high anomaly.

Anomaly map for Friday morning.  How many degrees above normal will our region be?

This is not a January thaw.  We are way past that.

Our above normal temperatures will continue until at least Monday.  It may go past Monday.

There will be a small chance for a shower or storm on Friday and Friday night.  I believe the chances will be isolated.  Clouds will linger, as well.

Patchy fog possible on Friday night.

Saturday and Saturday night
Confidence:  Medium

Mild temperatures for Saturday.  Above normal temperatures. Here is the 6 am and 6 pm temperature anomaly map for Saturday.  How many degrees above normal will temperatures be?  Our normal high temperatures are around 40 to 42 degrees.

6 AM Saturday

and 6 PM

Actual air temperatures at 6 AM, 12 PM, and 6 PM on Saturday

6 AM Saturday

12 PM Saturday temperatures.  Mild!  Understatement.

6 PM Saturday temperatures.

Some sun is anticipated on Saturday.  Partly sunny.  It would not surprise me if it ends up cloudy.  It is hard to scour out clouds during the winter months.  Let’s root for partly sunny.

Small rain chances during the day on Saturday.  Rain chances ramp up on Saturday night as another storm system moves into the region.  An area of low pressure will move to our south and east.  Normally this would be a heavy snow event.  Not this time.

Here is the future-cast radar for 9 AM Saturday.  MAYBE some spotty showers.  Low confidence on those showers developing.  I am hoping that most of Saturday (day) will remain dry.

Saturday at 3 PM.  This is the future-cast radar.  Look to the southwest.  There is our next system.

Saturday 9 PM future-cast radar.

Saturday night should see an increase in precipitation across our region.

Sunday and Sunday night
Confidence:  Medium

Temperatures will remain above normal on both Sunday and Sunday.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible, especially on Sunday.  The system will pull off to the east and northeast Sunday afternoon and evening.

Shower chances will diminish into Sunday night.

This is the 12 PM Sunday map.  You can see showers in our region.  The low is moving into northern Mississippi and southwest Tennessee.

Green is rain.  Yelow is moderate rain.

This is the Sunday evening weather map.  Nice low pressure center to our south and southeast.  That places us on the cold side.  This normally would bring us snow in January. Not this year.

This next map is for Monday at 12 AM.  System is pulling away from our region.

Notice the tightly backed isobars?  Isobars are equal lines of pressure.  When they are tightly packed together it means windy conditions.  Winds will gust above 30 mph as this system pulls through our region and off to the east.

Here are the wind gust maps for Sunday and Sunday night.

Here is the 6 PM Sunday map.  Wind gusts.

Here is the 6 AM Monday wind gust map.

Monday
Confidence:  Medium

I have Monday with very low precipitation chances.    There might be some remaining moisture and clouds, but I believe the precipitation risk is small (less than 20%).  I will keep an eye on Monday.

Somewhat cooler temperatures are anticipated for Monday.

Here is the 12 PM Monday temperature map.  Seasonal temperatures are in the lower 40’s.  Close!

Pattern Change:

A colder pattern is shaping up for the last week of January.  Perhaps some precipitation concerns, as well.

Colder air will filter into the region by the middle and end of next week.

Several areas of low pressure might dive in from the northwest.  Alberta Clippers?  Those can produce snow on the northeast and east side of the lows path.  Let’s keep an eye on it.

February will be a roller-coaster, but several significant cold shots are likely to occur.  Right now the precipitation outlook indicates below normal.  With that said, we have been in an active period since November and especially December.  That has continued into January.

The colder air pattern could shift the storm track further south.  That could mean wintry precipitation in our region.

No major shifts in this forecast package update.

whatamiconcered

No major concerns.  Patchy dense fog could lower visibility on Friday night and Saturday morning.  Fog may redevelop on Saturday night, as well.

Additional showers and storms possible by late Saturday night and especially on Sunday.  We don’t need more rain.

2014-11-24_13-38-04

Severe thunderstorm outlook.

Remember that a severe thunderstorm is defined as a thunderstorm that produces 58 mph winds or higher, quarter size hail or larger, and/or a tornado.

Thursday night into Friday night:  Severe weather is not anticipated.  Lightning possible Thursday night.

Friday and Friday night:  Slight risk for a thunderstorm.  Lightning would be the concern.Saturday into Sunday night:  Some storms are possible.  At this time, severe weather appears unlikely.  Monitor updates.

Saturday into Sunday night:  System moving to our south and east should keep us on the cool side of the low.  Perhaps some lightning, but severe weather should remain to our south.

We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not update then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.

During the winter months you can track snow and ice by clicking the winterize button on the local city view interactive radars.

There is a lot of noise on the internet.  A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation.  Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.

My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.

  • Communicate in simple terms
  • To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
  • Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, email, texts, and this blog
  • Minimize the “hype” that you might see on some television stations or through other weather sources
  • Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
