The remnants of Hurricane Helene will result in very rainy conditions and gusty winds. Rainfall amounts today through Saturday of 2 to 5 inches are possible. Wind gusts today into the evening up to 40-50 mph will remain breezy Saturday gusting 20-30 mph before finally becoming light to end the weekend. A few stray showers are possible in the east Monday; otherwise, dry conditions are expected for the workweek ahead. A dry frontal passage is projected midweek.
A Haines Index of 6 means a high potential for an existing fire to become large or exhibit erratic fire behavior, 5 means medium potential, 4 means low potential, and anything less than 4 means very low potential.

Beau’s Forecast Discussion
Well, rain event has arrived. Widespread rain covers the radars this morning.
Here was the 5 am radar view. Rain is spiralling into the region from the remnants of Hurricane Helene.
Remember, low pressure rotates counterclockwise. That is why the rain looks like it is spinning into our region from odd directions. It is rotating around the center of low pressure.
Hurricane Helene moved ashore as a category four hurricane. It may have been a category five, but the National Hurricane Center will have to decide that once they see the damage.
Winds were well over 100 mph. Widespread damage has been reported. Some deaths, as well. Storm surge reached more than 15′ in some counties. Terrible.
The system continues to spin northward at a rapid pace.
Check out this barometric pressure map. Very impressive area of low pressure in Georgia. It is still a tropical storm. The black lines are isobars. Equal lines of pressure. Those tight isobars will bring strong and gusty winds to our region.
Here is the latest track forecast. D means tropical depression. Notice how it stalls out over our region.
Speaking of wind. I am forecasting 20 to 40 mph wind gusts today and tonight. There could be 30 to 40 mph gusts, as well. I am monitoring the risk of gusts above 45 mph over southern Illinois and northwest Kentucky.
Keep in mind, wind gusts underneath the low pressure center will be calm. Away from it is where the strong winds are located. Where you see tight isobars is where the wind gusts are highest.
We do not expect tornadoes from this system in my forecast area. There will be a risk over central and eastern Kentucky. As always, monitor updates in case there are changes. I will be monitoring the system throughout the day and night.
Rain will continue into tonight and tomorrow. Numerous showers. Isolated lightning.

We will have showers on radar Saturday night into Sunday. With time, the showers will become increasingly scattered. By Monday, only a couple of showers are expected over our eastern counties.
Rainfall totals from last night through Sunday will range from one to three inches. Then, there will be pockets of three to five inches. Isolated higher totals can’t be ruled out.
I am monitoring the risk of flooding. We are in drought. Some locations did receive heavy rain over the past seven days. The risk of lowland flooding, ditches flooding, and roadways flooding will be a bit higher in areas that are already wet.
Otherwise, scattered flooding will be possible with this system. Widespread flash flooding appears unlikely. Avoid flooded roadways, if they develop.
Cool weather today and tomorrow, because of clouds and rain. Highs in the 60s and lower 70s.
Speaking of 70s! We will have 70s all the way through next week.
Another cold front arrives Tuesday and Tuesday night. It will bring cooler temperatures. Overnight lows in the 40s and 50s by Tuesday and Wednesday night. Autumn air.
